Joya and Maude: What Lingers

Joya and Maude:

What Lingers

Some scents follow the rules, vanishing on cue, never overstaying their welcome. Others refuse to let go, settling into collarbones and bed sheets, reappearing when you least expect them. In creating our candle for Maude, we wanted something intimate, a fragrance with depth and presence.

Perfume has always been a love language, whispered in passing or scribbled in the margins of memory. Some demand attention, like the swirl of oud in a Fifth Avenue boutique or the rush of amber and spice on a crowded West Village sidewalk. But this candle was designed for quieter moments, the kind you feel rather than notice. It doesn’t vanish when you step away nor does it precede you into a room. Instead, it lingers, softly revealing itself to those who pause long enough to notice.

“Scent has a way of pulling us back—sometimes to a person a place or a moment we’d rather not forget (or in some cases one we wish we could). It lingers in the air on skin in sheets quietly shaping how we remember intimacy. At maude we see scent as more than just a fragrance; it’s a mood-setter a memory-maker and sometimes a reminder of exactly who was there.

That’s why we were part of Private Lives: From the Bedroom to Social Networks at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (MAD) an exhibition exploring how intimacy has evolved over time. From the deep heady perfumes of past decades—meant to entice and leave a mark—to the fresh clean notes that signaled propriety scent has always been a love language for better or worse. maude’s take? Warm intimate scents that feel familiar inviting and impossible to forget.”

Éva Goicochea, Founder of Maude

Inspired by this philosophy, we balanced fragrance oils for both air diffusion and skin contact, crafting a candle that draws you closer rather than announcing itself. Displayed at Private Lives: From the Bedroom to Social Networks at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris it stood among objects of desire and intimacy, a reminder that fragrance has always shaped how we remember and experience closeness.

Its warmth weaves through fabric and thought, lingering long after the flame has gone out, a subtle aura that remains unspoken yet undeniable.

Each candle carries its own invitation:

Burn No. 0 – Bare and unscented for those who seek simplicity in touch and warmth
Burn No. 1 – Earthy and golden where amber meets cedar leaf lemongrass and medjool date
Burn No. 2 – A floral whisper of pink pepper violet and cedarwood—soft warm familiar
Burn No. 3 – A quiet indulgence of crisp skin musk tonka bean and dry woods—weightless

Let its glow draw you closer, linger in memory and remind you that sometimes, the subtlest notes leave the strongest echoes.
